Read Women 2014

Read Women 2014 by Joanna Walsh

Have you heard? 2014 is the Year of Reading Women. Information released last year from VIDA, an organization dedicated to women in literary arts, highlighted the disparity between how male and female authors and book reviewers are treated. For example, in 2012 at The New York Times Review of Books, only 22 percent of the books reviewed were by female authors, and 16 percent of the reviewers were women (The Guardian, 2014).

Artificial Intelligence: Humankind's Future or Our End?

DVD cover of the John Badham film WarGames

The pace of technological change and the ongoing development of artificial intelligence could quickly create a world barely recognizable from the one we currently inhabit. Futurist Ray Kurzweil envisions untold benefits from what he predicts will be the next stages of humankind's evolutionary progress, the melding of man and machine, followed by wholly intelligent machines. Many scientists scoff at Kurzweil's predictions, while others fear that those predictions may actually come true. In the meantime, Hollywood has used those fears to produce a number of terrifying sci-fi thrillers featuring runaway robots and run-amok computers.

Happy Summer! Here at the Des Moines Public Library, the start of summer is official when the Summer Reading program begins. This year, in addition to the children's and teen programs, we're also offering a program for adults. The Book Bingo Challenge begins today (June 9) and is a Bingo card with 25 reading challenges. To participate, pick up a Bingo card and complete one vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line (that’s five spaces), fill out the form with your information and the books you read, and turn the form in to any DMPL location.
