Wonder of Words Lunch Outside the Box: Ty Smedes

Renowned Iowa nature photographer, Ty Smedes, puts the best of Iowa images together to create beautiful books. His presentation will feature photos from his newest book, The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles which chronicles the comeback of eagles from the brink of extinction. His spectacular color photographs capture the power, grace and majesty of the bald eagle as it returned to prominence in Iowa. His other book, Capturing Iowa’s Seasons, follows the common and uncommon visitor to Iowa’s landscape throughout the year.

The Drake Writers and Critics Series, in partnership with the Des Moines Public Library, will present the 2014 Writers’ Harvest.
Reception with refreshments follows

Poet Sandy Longhorn and author Aimee LaBrie, this year’s judges of the Periphery prizes, will read alongside several Drake student writers from Periphery 51 at the Des Moines Public Library, Central Branch. This project is in support of the Food Bank of Iowa.

Dr. Ann M. Crowley is a registered dietician and commercial food photographer who has combined the art and science of food in a wonderful recipe collection. As an associate professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa and Director of Nutrition Services at the university of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, she published extensively in professional and popular journals. Her weekly food and nutrition column was published in newspapers throughout the Midwest for thirty-two years. She has travelled extensively.

David Nelson’s, Tennessee’s Cowboy Poet Laureate, cowboy career began in the mid-1990’s when he worked with the Kirkwell Cattle Company in Springfield Colorado. Cowboy Poetry has been around for centuries and is a unique form of storytelling. In America, it has its roots during the Great Cattle Drives of the 1880s. Cowboys would come in after working all day and sit around telling yarns in rhyme. In 2004, Nelson was given the title of "The Cowboy Poet Laureate of Tennessee" by Governor Bredesen and the General Assembly.

Chad Lewis is the author of The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations, which explores haunted bridges, cemeteries, historic homes, roads, theaters, and much more. Lewis is a researcher and lecturer on topics of the strange and unusual. His background is in Psychology and he holds both a BS and MS degree in the field. For past twenty years, he has traveled the globe in search of unique and bizarre stories and history. www.chadlewisresearch.com
