Red Flag Awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Children and Families of Iowa, Domestic Violence Services is bringing awareness to abusive and unhealthy relationships through the use of red flags. We are asking people to write warning signs of abusive and unhealthy relationships on red flags and displaying them at various places. Please stop by our booth from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on October 23rd to create a red flag of an abusive and unhealthy relationship and obtain information about domestic violence and our services.

Writers' Workshop and Wonder of Words: The Journey from Finance to Fiction

Join author Mary Gottschalk as she discusses the life lessons that inspired her to give up corporate America to become a writer. Her first book was a memoir, Sailing down the Moonbeam. Chad Lewis is the author of The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations, which explores haunted bridges, cemeteries, historic homes, roads, theaters, and much more. Lewis is a researcher and lecturer on topics of the strange and unusual. His background is in Psychology and he holds both a BS and MS degree in the field. Wonder of Words Lunch Outside the Box: Ty Smedes

Renowned Iowa nature photographer, Ty Smedes, puts the best of Iowa images together to create beautiful books. His presentation will feature photos from his newest book, The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles which chronicles the comeback of eagles from the brink of extinction. His spectacular color photographs capture the power, grace and majesty of the bald eagle as it returned to prominence in Iowa. His other book, Capturing Iowa’s Seasons, follows the common and uncommon visitor to Iowa’s landscape throughout the year.

Dr. Ann M. Crowley is a registered dietician and commercial food photographer who has combined the art and science of food in a wonderful recipe collection. As an associate professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa and Director of Nutrition Services at the university of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, she published extensively in professional and popular journals. Her weekly food and nutrition column was published in newspapers throughout the Midwest for thirty-two years. She has travelled extensively.

Telemedicine in Iowa: Improving Health Care Delivery

Dr. Patrick D. Brophy is the UI director of pediatric nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation, as well as the assistant vice president for the university’s eHealth & Innovation Center. Join Brophy as he discusses the center’s developing telemedicine program, which will deliver diverse health care options to rural Iowa. Its benefits include reduced costs and travel, increased access to specialties and follow-up care at the local level, and more engagement with personal health care decisions.
