Kids! Do you like to cook and make snacks? Then come to the South Side Library this summer and learn how to make easy, kid-friendly snacks with the Iowa State University Extension! After attending five sessions, attendees will receive a certificate. Preregistration is required. Space is limited. For kids entering Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Groups may not register for this program.

"Plant, Grow, Fly!" with the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department

Kids! Learn about plants with the South Side Library and the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department! Join us as we read a story about planting, decorate a flower pot, and learn from Parks and Recreation Environmental Educator Joel Van Roekel how to plant your own plant! Preregistration required. For youth entering in 2nd-5th Grade. In case of rain, event will be held in the Meeting Room. Space is limited to 20 kids. Groups may not register for this program.

Pollinator Pals with the Blank Park Zoo

Kids and families! Come to the South Side Library and learn how to start your own butterfly garden for free with the Blank Park Zoo! Zoo educators will have an adult presentation outlining the best plants and tips for your garden and kids can engage in STEM butterfly activities and games. We'll have live monarch butterflies to view, and each family will receive a free host and a free nectar plant to start your own garden! Preregistration is required. For youth ages 5-12.

Teen / Tween Coding with Dash-Dot Robots

Dash & Dot are robots that teach coding. Use Blockly, a Scratch-inspired app, to practice programming by dragging and dropping commands into place. Our challenge: Learn to code in order to make Dash do the chicken dance! No prior coding experience necessary. For those entering 4th-12th grades. Coding with Bee-Bot

Kids will have so much fun with Bee-Bot, they might not realize they’re learning pre-coding skills! Bee-Bot is a colorful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robot that actually helps kids to learn sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and simple coding. Plus, they’re just fun! This activity is for those entering K – 3rd grades. Presented by the Iowa State University Extension Office.
