July 13th, 2:00pm to 4:00pm
David Gradwohl, professor emeritus of anthropology and founding director of the ISU Archeological lab, will provide a presentation on Buxton, Iowa. Buxton, a coal mining town, which existed between 1900 and 1925, boasted a large Black population of professionals and immigrants from countries such as Belgium, Sweden, France, Norway and Germany. The town’s residents of diverse heritages existed with little racial and ethnic discrimination until its evacuation. A question and answer session will immediately follow the formal program.
