How-To Tuesday for Families: Scavenger Hunt

Learn how to discover everything we have at Central Library during our Family Scavenger Hunt! Stop by the Children's area between 5:00pm and 6:30pm to begin and find out all kinds of amazing things at the library while being entered to win a prize jar of your choice. Scavenger hunt will take between 30 minutes to 1 hour.

How-To Tuesday for Families: E-Reading for Families

Learn how to use DMPL's online resources to check out books and audiobooks for kids, teens and beyond! We will cover 3M, Wilbor, and Tumblebooks, giving an overview of what's available and a brief walk through on getting them on a device. Afterwards, browse some titles on our 3M e-readers, available for checkout. Please bring your library card and PIN number. You must be a resident of Des Moines or Windsor Heights. Children will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registrations are encouraged and drop-ins are welcome!

Wonder of Words: Writer's Harvest

The Drake Writers and Critics Series, in partnership with the Des Moines Public Library, will present the 2014 Writers’ Harvest.
Reception with refreshments follows

Poet Sandy Longhorn and author Aimee LaBrie, this year’s judges of the Periphery prizes, will read alongside several Drake student writers from Periphery 51 at the Des Moines Public Library, Central Branch. This project is in support of the Food Bank of Iowa.

Wonder of Words Lunch Outside the Box: The Cowboy Poet David Nelson

David Nelson’s, Tennessee’s Cowboy Poet Laureate, cowboy career began in the mid-1990’s when he worked with the Kirkwell Cattle Company in Springfield Colorado. Cowboy Poetry has been around for centuries and is a unique form of storytelling. In America, it has its roots during the Great Cattle Drives of the 1880s. Cowboys would come in after working all day and sit around telling yarns in rhyme. In 2004, Nelson was given the title of "The Cowboy Poet Laureate of Tennessee" by Governor Bredesen and the General Assembly.

How-to Tuesday: Free Advice for Your Device

Bring your mobile device (smartphone, tablet or e-reader) to one of our classes and get some advice and help installing the library's apps for e-books, downloadable audiobooks and e-magazines. Classes and apps are all free. Your gadget must have basic setup done (out of the box, set up, passwords entered, charged and know the basics) as a prerequisite to this class. You will need your library card and PIN, and you may need the password for your App Store on your device. Pre-register as class size is limited so we can give one-on-one attention.
