Teen Cosplay and Costuming 101

Have you ever wanted to design your own costume, but didn’t know where to begin? Maybe you’ve cosplayed before and just want some tips and ideas for next time. Experienced and beginning cosplayers alike are invited to sign up for this 3 day workshop, where we will discuss the history of cosplay as well as the supplies, planning, and research that goes into creating a great costume. This program is open to teens aged 12-18, and registration is required.

Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible in parts of the continental United States. Here in Des Moines we will see a partial eclipse, the moon will cover 95 percent of the sun, a spectacular sight.

Franklin Avenue Library will host a Viewing Party. All participants are required to receive a mandatory safety viewing lesson and pair of protective glasses. Please bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, and plenty of water. In case of inclement weather, we will have a live feed of the eclipse from NASA in the Meeting Room.

Solar Eclipse, the Celestial Event of the Century

On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible in parts of the continental United States. Here in Des Moines we will see a partial eclipse, the moon will cover 95 percent of the sun, a spectacular sight.

Dave Lynch, member of the Des Moines Astronomical Society, who has been chasing solar eclipses for forty years, will share stories of his travels to ten countries and two oceans with photographs of fifteen different eclipses.

Come to the library for a special sneak preview of the Des Moines Community Playhouse production of A Little House Christmas, based on the classic series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Ma, Pa, Mary, and Laura Ingalls gather the whole family together at their home to celebrate the holidays. When a natural disaster strikes, it seems like Santa won’t be able to make it! Enjoy the performance and register to win free tickets to the play!

Free Friday Flicks at Franklin - The Theory of Everything

Eddie Redmayne won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of eminent physicist Stephen Hawking and Best Actress nominee Felicity Jones co-stars as Jane Wilde, a fellow student at Cambridge with whom he starts an unlikely romance in The Theory of Everything. The 2014 film dramatizes Hawking's quick rise to fame in the field of cosmology and his marriage to Jane amidst his dire diagnosis of ALS disease.
