What We Do: The Des Moines Public Library Foundation

Our Mission

The Des Moines Public Library Foundation, founded in 1998, raises funds and advocates for the Des Moines Public Library.

What do those dollars do?

The Foundation raises dollars to support the programs and services that can't be covered through the library's normal annual operating budget. Eighty seven percent of the DMPL programming is supported by the DMPL Foundation and our generous, caring donors!

Summer Reading

This eight-week community outreach program takes place in all six locations of the Des Moines Public Library system. The goals of the Summer Reading program include motivating children to read over their summer break from school, developing positive attitudes about reading and books, encouraging regular use of the library and attracting new users to the public library system.

Iowa Author Awards

For the last twelve years, the Des Moines Public Library Foundation has gathered friends, donors, and community advocates for an annual celebration to honor Iowa's literary heritage, both past and future. Three Iowa authors are chosen to receive this annual award, along with a Friend of Literacy.

AViD (Authors Visiting in Des Moines)

The AViD (Authors Visiting in Des Moines) program is a free speaker series which is open to the public and designed to appeal to a diverse audience in the greater metro community. Nationally known authors will appear in a variety of venues to discuss the challenges and rewards that come with being an author.
