Hip Hop 101

This course will introduce participants to the components of hip hop. Students will learn writing and production considerations unique to hip-hop-from distinctive drum beats and bass lines to use of vocals, samples, and instrumentation. They will also explore the history and traditional elements of hip-hop, including breakdancing and emceeing. Students will learn to analyze and recreate different styles of hip-hop music, and then use this foundation to begin writing their own songs.

Play, Grow, Learn!

Play, Grow, Learn! is an opportunity for you to use the Imagination Station to explore early literacy tips and books, play with others, and develop early literacy skills using Forest Avenue Library's space and toys. This is an unsupervised, drop-in playtime where parents and caregivers are encouraged to interact with their children. Many items will be available for free exploration and play.

Occasional stress is good; chronic stress is not. Join us to learn scientifically proven techniques you can use to improve your mental wellbeing of which stress management plays a role.

Mary Van Heukelom, Program Director for Above+Beyond Cancer, is a Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer and Wellness Coach. She leads the Total Training Class, a small group personal training program for survivors at the Wellmark YMCA of Des Moines, teaches Mindfulness Meditation, facilitates book club, bike club and leads the Adventure Fitness Program in Des Moines.
