Program Description

Event Details

Monika Owczarski is an accidental farmer. She grew up in central Iowa and she is a first generation farmer. She has no history or formal training in farming, and used to be a social worker. Monika worked with the Parks and Rec Department to transform a derelict pocket park next door to her home in the River Bend neighborhood into the first garden that Sweet Tooth Farm started growing on. In 2021 Sweet Tooth Farm will be leasing just over 3 acres in 50314 just north of Downtown Des Moines. Monika runs a farm stand to make sure to give the first access to the produce she grows to the people living in the neighborhood. Monika is committed to social justice, and equity in our food system and in all systems.

We'll hear about the "spark" that shaped Owczarski's community engagement, details about the work she is doing, and what keeps her motivated to stay involved.  Part of a monthly series which features committed volunteers, founders of organizations, business leaders, philanthropists, city employees, elected representatives, and more.

Tune in on Facebook or YouTube for the premiere.
