Seed Library

The Seed Library at the East Side Library is a free resource for people to take and share seeds with the community.

How does our seed library work?
  1. Choose your seeds: Check out up to 5 packets per month.
  2. Plant your garden, and return any unused seeds from the borrowed packet.
  3. Save your seeds that the plants produce to donate back to the seed library. This step is optional.
Seed donation guidelines:

Seed donations are encouraged, but not required. Return dry, cleaned seeds from healthy, open-pollinated plants when possible.

Volunteer to help with the Seed Library:

Things we could use help with include:

  • Packaging seeds
  • Sorting donations
  • Upkeeping the catalog

Visit the information desk at the East Side Library to learn more.

The Seed Library at the East Side Library was made possible through a generous estate gift from James W. Hughes, in memory of John and Jeanne Hughes, to the Des Moines Public Library Foundation.
