Early Literacy Activities:
It’s December! It’s cold, you’re shopping for the holidays, making meals for family get-togethers, and trying to avoid cabin fever with the kids. Here are some activities to consider this month to help strengthen your children’s early literacy skills! For more information, check out our Simple Steps to Success website:

  • On a road trip? Go on a scavenger hunt and try to spy all the letters in your child’s name while looking at license plates. You can do this in the aisle of the store as well.
  • Use a clothespin to pick up small items and drop them in a cup. Count them too! The activity will increase finger strength, which is important for writing and drawing.
  • Use construction paper to make placemats for your family. Write their names on the placemats!
  • Think of a winter-related word, like snow, chill, or cold, and name words that rhyme with it.
  • On New Year’s Eve, make a clock out of a paper plate and count down to “midnight” on it.

Happy Holidays... we'll see you at the library!
