Event Details
This Pride Month, join DMPL and our partners at Iowa Safe Schools and UCS Healthcare to talk about LGBTQ issues, ask questions, and discover awesome resources! In this four-session series, you’ll meet other teens in the community like you who are interested in learning about LGBTQ topics, such as gender, terminology, advocacy, self-care, and health.
Each registrant will receive a Pride Series Kit containing everything you will need for the series, plus some great swag! Kits will be available for pick up starting Tuesday, June 1, at the Central Library Pick-Up Window.
By registering for the first event, you are automatically registered for all four sessions.
The series will include the following sessions:
Queer 101: Monday, June 7 (4:00-5:00 PM)
We’re going back to the basics! In this first session, we'll lay the groundwork of terms, ideas, and topics that will be helpful to know as we learn throughout this month together. We’ll be taking time to go over terms that are often used within the LGBTQ community and go through an activity called the genderbread person, where we establish the differences between sexual/romantic orientation, gender identity, biological sex, and gender expression.
Personal & Community Advocacy: Monday, June 14 (4:00-5:00 PM)
Your voice matters! There are many ways you can amplify your own voice through personal and community advocacy. Get ready to go through the tips and tricks to creating a story that is meaningful and powerful.
Self-Care and Support: Monday, June 21 (4:00-5:00 PM)
Self care isn’t selfish, it’s important! The sooner you can work it into your daily routine, the better. We will be leading participants through some awesome self care activities and show you how to incorporate self care in different spaces and environments.
Queer Professionalism: Monday, June 28 (4:00-5:00 PM)
Let’s get professional! Navigating the professional world as a queer person can feel like a lot, but we know you’re capable, and we’re here to help. Whether you’re applying for college or scholarships or wondering how you can best express your identity while also dressing for success, we’ve got you covered! We’ll also have the President of our Student Leadership Council joining us to share her experiences and skills that she has gained.
